i once sat in a 3rd year philosophy class for my then-gf cause she couldnt make it to class and i was gonna take notes for her
they discussed the concept of negative responsibility that day
the following scenario was given:
-it is a hostage situation -there are 20 hostages and one man with a gun holding them hostage -the man tells you to kill one of the hostages and the rest will be freed -if you dont kill anyone, he will kill all of them
so what to do in this situation?
-if you kill one, you are responsible for that death -if you dont kill any of them, you are responsible for all their deaths (negative responsibility)
interesting scenario.
the best part of the class is that no one said stupid things like shoot the man holding them hostage, or shoot one in the foot and make the hostage pretend they're dead and then come back and save him/her. that is, no idiots spoke
what i wanna know is, if you shoot yourself, would you eliminate yourself from all responsibilty? and by the principle of negative responsibility, would all the hostages and the gunmen be responsible for your death?
